On This Page:
The Single view grading pages in the Moodle gradebook let instructors quickly edit grades for a single student or activity. Single view grading pages also let you insert a specific value for all empty items, perform bulk overrides of grades, enter feedback comments, and exclude grades from calculations.
Note: You can filter a Single view grading page based on groups if your course has a default Group mode set on the Course settings page. See Sort the Moodle Gradebook Using Groups.

When viewing the Grader report, it is easy to access the Single view page for a student or grade item:
- On the main page of your course, in the Administration block, click Grades. The gradebook will open to the Grader report, or the last page you viewed under the View tab. If needed, click Grader report .
- Each column and row heading contains a Single view icon (). To view and edit the Single View page:

A grading page will open showing all the grades for the student, or all the students for the grade item.
- See Modify Grades on the Single View Page (below).
Open a Single View Grading Page from the Single View Tab
The Single view tab provides two drop-down menus—one for Students and another for Grade items. This is especially helpful if you have a large class or several grade items in your gradebook.
- On the main page of your course, in the Administration block, click Grades. The gradebook will open to the last page you viewed under the View tab.
- In the navigation tabs (at top), click Single view. The Single view selection page will open.

- To grade an individual student, select a student name from the Users drop-down menu.
- To enter grades for a particular grade item, select the title of the grade item from the Grade items drop-down menu.
The Single view page will open showing all the grade items for the student, or all the students for the grade item.
- See Modify Grades on the Single View Page (below).

- In the Override grade column, select the check boxes for the items you wish to grade, or in the column heading, click All to make all grades editable.
?Note: Manually created Grade items do not require this step. - In the Grade and Feedback columns, enter or edit existing grades and feedback.

- When you return to the Grader report, overridden grade items will be displayed with an orange background and marked “Overridden” to indicate grades have been edited in the gradebook.

Insert the Same Grade for Multiple Items/Students
To fill in blank grades or replace multiple grades in a bulk action:
- In the Override grade column (at left), select the check boxes for the items you wish to grade. You can select individual boxes, or in the column heading, click All to make all grades editable.
?Note: Manual grade items do not require this step, all others that have Override grade deselected will be skipped. - At the bottom of the page, below the table, select the Perform bulk insert check box.
- Enter the grade you wish to give in the Insert value field.
Note: All entries must be numeric. This function does not work with grade items graded with scales or letters. - From the drop-down menu:
- To enter the grade only in cells that are blank, select Empty grades.
- To enter the grade in all cells, select All grades.
- Click Update to save grade changes. A confirmation message will appear. Click Continue to refresh the Single View grading page.
- When you return to the Grader report, overridden grade items will be displayed with an orange background and marked “Overridden” to indicate grades have been edited in the gradebook.
Note: If you enter mistaken grades and wish to start over, see Remove Overrides from Grade Items, below.
Exclude Grades from Category Calculations
Note: A grade item that is excluded from a category calculation is also excluded from the Course Total.
- Open a Single View grading page for a student or grade item, as described above.
- In the Exclude from totals column (at right), select check boxes to exclude grades from being calculated in Category (and Course) totals. To exclude all items, click All.
- Click Update to save grade changes. A confirmation message will appear. Click Continue to refresh the Single View grading page.
- When you return to the Grader report, excluded grades will be marked as “Excluded.”
- To clear exclusions, return to the Single View grading page, uncheck the item(s), and click Update.
Remove Overrides from Grade Items
On the Single view page you can quickly remove overridden grades for grade items. This is especially useful if you’ve accidentally overridden values in a calculated grade item such as a category total.
- Open a Single View grading page for a student or grade item, as described above.
- In the Override grade column, uncheck the items for which to clear overrides. To remove overrides from all items, click None.
- When finished, click Update. A confirmation message will appear. Click Continue to refresh the Single View page. Any grade items that were previously overridden revert to the previous value—either blank (if entered in the gradebook), to the grade provided from within a Moodle activity (such as an Assignment, Forum, or Quiz), or the calculated value in the case of category totals.
- When you return to the Grader report, items for which you cleared overrides will no longer be marked “Overriden” and the grade cells will no longer have an orange background.
