Simple Weighted Mean of Grades uses Max Grade point values to determine weight.
When a grading category uses Simple Weighted Mean of Grades, the fields of the Weights column in the Gradebook Setup page disappear. They cannot be modified. Instead, the weight percentage for each grade item is automatically calculated by dividing its Max Grade point value by the total available points in the grading category.
Note: Natural aggregation supports all of the functionality of Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. Furthermore, Natural aggregation offers additional features that are not found in Simple Weighted Mean of Grades, for example the ability to override automatically calculated weight percentages. It is highly recommended that new courses use Natural rather than Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. Natural aggregation is a better alternative to Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. Please refer to Aggregation: Natural for more details.

- From the course page, click the Gradebook Setup link found in the Course Administration block.
- The Gradebook Setup page loads.Aggregation is a setting that applies to grading categories, which are indicated by folder icons in the Gradebook Setup page. Click the Edit link for one of the grading categories. In this example, the main course grading category will be edited.
- A small popup menu appears. Click Edit Settings.
- In the Grade Category section, click the Aggregation drop down and select Simple Weighted Mean of Grades.
- When all desired changes have been made to the Edit Category page, click the Save Changes button. If no changes have been made, click the Cancel button.
- The Gradebook Setup page reloads.In this example, because Simple Weighted Mean of Grades is used by the History 104 grading category, no fields appear in the Weights column for each subcategory: Assignments, Quizzes, Forums, and Final Exam. Instead, weights for each subcategory are automatically determined by their point value. Assignments are worth 250 out of 500 points (50%), Quizzes are worth 100 out of 500 points (20%), Forums are worth 50 out of 500 points (10%), and Final Exam is worth 100 out of 500 points (20%).
- Note: Simple Weighted Mean of Grades allows the Maximum Grade of the grading category total to be changed. Instead of being an automatically calculated sum, the Maximum Grade defaults to 100 points. To change this value, return to the Edit Category page and change the Maximum Grade field in the Category Total section.In this example, the course’s grading category uses Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. Because the Assignments, Quizzes, Forums, and Final Exam subcategories are worth 250, 100, 50, and 100 points respectively, setting a Maximum Grade of 500 is an intuitive choice.
